Got White Hair? You Are Senile!

July 26th, 2009

Miss Dorothy, who cut and colored my hair for years, retired. I was devastated. After all, she’s just a kid - she’s only sixty. However, after I understood that she had a good reason to call it quits, I wished her well.

But I miss her. She could make my sparse locks look as big and mean as an angry hornet’s nest.

Most of all I miss her wisdom. For example, she said that she would rather be bald than have white hair. I really didn’t get the significance of that until I decided to let my hair go back to its natural color - white.

Miss Dorothy grudgingly made the color change during the last months she worked and at the end, insisted on putting on some blond color. “No one is going to call you a little old lady with this sexy color,” she assured me.

I quickly let the blond thing go. Too much trouble to keep it up.

Big mistake.

No - a huge mistake.

Now, for women whose hair is gray, white or something in between, and happy with it - my blessings upon you. May you never suffer “white hair discrimination.”

Here’s the thing: When you have white hair, you are perceived as o-l-d. No matter what your face and or body look like, white hair categorizes you in an instant. It tells the world who and what you are, even if you are prematurely gray or white. You are an old person. There is no getting around it.

What’s wrong with that? Well, basically, people, especially young people, treat you differently. It’s not my imagination - it’s real. It goes beyond the “looking old” issue - it relates to perception of ability. “Old” women simply aren’t viewed as competent as young people.

It’s different with men. They can have white hair, no hair, a face full of overgrown grubby vegetation, look like a grizzled old goat, and it’s okay. They don’t look old. They look distinguished. They are considered competent. Yuck.

In the doctor’s office recently, the young nurse gave me instructions for taking care of my husband’s minor surgery. She didn’t explain it to him - I guess that since he looks older than I and has white hair, she assumed he was too senile to understand.

She spoke directly to me as if he didn’t exist. What needed to be done wasn’t difficult: clean the incision with antibacterial solution and apply antibiotic ointment daily. Then she said to me, “Do you need me to write that down?” Well, maybe some folks would appreciate that but I didn’t.

Please don’t assume I’m senile until there is tangible evidence!

I’m thinking - if my hair color were different, would it have made a difference? Would she have taken for granted that I had the ability to understand and remember what she said?

Then there was the young woman who asked if I had any great grandkids. Excuse me? My grandchildren are barely teenage.

I’m thinking - if my hair were a young color, would the question have been about grandkids instead of great grandkids? Would she have asked about kids at all?

Then there’s the annoyance at the supermarket. I know baggers are trained to offer help out to the car, but please, I can carry a head of cabbage all by myself.

Long story short: As soon as I find a replacement for the irreplaceable Miss Dorothy, I’m going to get a buzz cut. I have plenty of gel to make it stand up straight in the air. You know the look - “biker babe.” And I’ve already purchased the sexy blond color Miss Dorothy would have used.

I asked my husband what he thought about my proposed hair cut and color. He assumed his irritating professorial stance and opined, “Hmmm. I don’t think so. However, if you got tattoos on both your biceps it might work.”

I knew I shouldn’t have asked.

I’m going to go ahead with the buzz cut and blonde bombshell color - but not the tattoos. But I’ll mull it over. My husband is rarely wrong. Even though he has white hair, I know he’s not senile.

ID Your Dog: Methods to Keeping Your Puppy Safe

July 21st, 2009

According to the American Humane Society, just 15% of dogs in shelters ever find their way home again. Thankfully, these loved pooches had identification, enabling shelter personnel to contact and return them to their owners. With such discouraging statistics, it becomes clear how important it is to tag or identify your new puppy.

Even if your dog doesn’t go outside much or is always in your company, you must identify him or her. Windows and doors can be left open, offering your pup a too-tempting escape to the outside world. What should you do to keep your pup safe at home?

There are several ways to ID your pet to prevent against loss or theft. Ideally, implement at least two methods to ensure a safe return should your dog go missing.

Tattoos and microchips provide permanent ways to identify your dog. Shelters, veterinarians, and research laboratories know to look for these keys when animals are brought to their facilities.

Tattoos: this permanent identification system involves tattooing a code onto the dog’s skin, often inside the outer ear or on the inside of its leg. Veterinarians or trained specialists will ink the code for you. You will need to list your dog with one of the many tattoo registry programs around the country.

Microchips: these minuscule electronic chips are embedded under your dog’s skin. Because special scanners are needed to read the information located on the chip, most veterinarians, shelters, and research laboratories have these on hand to scan all strays for identification. Several registries offer membership for dogs with microchips.

While tattoos and microchips offer excellent safety measurements at a reasonable cost, the fact is most people don’t know to look for a tattoo or have the means available to scan for microchips. As a result, it’s essential you provide your pup with an ID tag worn on its collar. ID tags are often the first thing searched for when a stray is found by someone.

At a minimum, the tag should list a current phone number. Because people move and phone numbers change often, a second phone number of a trusted friend or family member is also recommended. If space is available, additional information to include is: your puppy’s name, your address, and any medical conditions.

Luckily, dog ID tags are not expensive to purchase, so it should be one of the first things you get your dog, once you’ve chosen a name. You can usually find just the right tag, too, that fits your lifestyle and your pet’s personality. Tags come in different materials, such as aluminum, brass, stainless steel or plastic, and in a variety of shapes and colors. Today’s glamour pooch can even have his or her own tag made of Swarovski crystals! When it comes to choosing a fun dog ID tag, the choices are limitless.

Whatever methods you use when protecting your pet against loss or theft, please remember to keep the contact information current. Just a few minutes of your time to update registry information or purchase a new dog tag can make all the difference in the world in your beloved dog’s life.

What are the Different Types of Tattoo Removal?

July 19th, 2009

Earlier tattoo removal techniques included methods such as dermabrasion; this is where the skin is sanded so that it removes both the surface layer and the middle layer of skin, the doctor then removes the tattoo with a scalpel and stitches the wound closed, this method usually results in excessive scarring to the skin.

With the increasing popularity of various cosmetic surgery procedures, including tattoo removal, it is imperative that the prospective patient research and understand different issues like what the procedure can and cannot treat inherent risks, costs, and other considerations. Keep in mind, cosmetic surgery is just that – a surgical procedure whose results cannot simply be erased.

Generally, experts emphasize that to date there is no form of tattoo removal that can guarantee your skin will look like it did before the tattoo. Experts point out that the process can leave some scarring or skin discoloration. Depending on the tattoo itself and the skin of the patient, results vary.

You might have seen a tattoo removal in which the skin was scarred in roughly the shape of the original tattoo. Pigment in the removal area might be slightly lighter or darker than surrounding skin. If a small tattoo is removed from an ankle, it isn’t very noticeable. However, a large tattoo removed from a bicep is quite noticeable. Though methods are always improving, possible scarring must be weighed against how much one wants to rid oneself of the tattoo.

Tattoo Removal Methods:

The basic types of tattoo removal are laser surgery, including Intense Pulsed Light therapy (IPL), excision, and dermabrasion. All effective tattoo removal methods involve some pain, and the most effective methods can be quite expensive.

Excision

Another popular method of tattoo removal especially when the dyed area is small is by excision. The advantage of this method is that the entire tattoo can be removed. With larger tattoos, however, it may be necessary to excise in stages, removing the center of it initially and the sides at a later date.

Dermabrasion

Another method of tattoo removal is called dermabrasion in which a small portion of the tattoo is sprayed with a solution that freezes the area. The tattoo is then “sanded” with a rotary abrasive instrument causing the skin to peel. Because some bleeding is likely to occur, a dressing is immediately applied to the area.

Laser

The surgeon can control the width of the laser beam as well as the wavelength (or color) of the light. Different wavelengths are used to destroy different colors of ink. Precise focusing makes it possible to eliminate the tattoo without damaging the surrounding skin.

Two to six treatments are usually needed, depending on the size of the tattoo. The treatment is relatively painless. Patients have described the sensation like a lightly stretched rubber band snapped against the skin. Afterwards, the treated area may feel somewhat like mild sunburn. The tattoo fades as the area heals, usually disappearing completely within a month or two. Not all tattoos, however, can be removed completely and leave just a shadow.

Another option to tattoo removal is to have the tattoo redone and improved by a professional tattoo artist. This can solve the problem if the tattoo is simply blurred or amateurish. There are also tattoo artists who specialize in tattooing over old tattoos with a new, completely different design. This solution is also less expensive than tattoo removal.

Discover How Lil Wayne Is All About Making Music

July 15th, 2009

Lil Wayne aka Weezy Baby is a talented rapper who gives you an unique version of hip hop music and the youth culture. Can you imagine what it would be like to live in a world without a variety of sounds? No doubt there are some music that you could just as well do without. But there are other music that displays unforgettable rhythmic patterns that gets you moving. This describes the music of Lil Wayne.

Biography

Born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. in New Orleans, LA, on September 27, 1982, Lil Wayne’s musical career began at the age of 11. Hailing from the streets of the 17th Ward of New Orleans, he was first recruited by Cash Money owners Bryan “Baby” Williams and Ronald “Slim” Williams.

Cash Money definitely influenced Lil Wayne’s style, rearing him with other artists such as Pimp Daddy and UNLV. Right from the start, Lil Wayne shined as a true emerging rap talent, catapulting his solo career. His freestyling abilities was a breathe of fresh air compared to the rappers of the past.

In the beginning of his career, Wayne did not rap about his childhood experiences, unlike many rappers of his time. Instead, he focused on clean rythyms and rhymes on behalf of his mother.

In the spring of 1997, Wayne helped formed the Hot Boys along with Juvenile, B.G. and Turk. As a member of this popular group and a successful solo artist in his own right, Lil Wayne easily became a platinum-selling superstar. With his distinctive high-pitched voice and hot beats, he had no problem finding legions of loyal fans.

Lil Wayne soon launched his solo career and immediately had two hit records under his belt, “The Block Is Hot” and “Lights Out”. His first successful album, “Tha Carter II”, which featured the hit, “The Fireman” was listed on The Billboard Hot 100 and Wayne gained nationwide recognition for his work. Yet recently, the album, “Like Father Like Son” has outsold all previous sales records and has the clubs jamming from coast to coast. The joint partnership song between Wayne and his mentor Birdman titled “Stuntin Like My Daddy” has turned this album into hip hop gold.

Personal Interests

Wayne’s tattoos have been a hot topic among his growing fan base. The main discussion has been the tattoos on his face and eyelids. There has been confusion on the meaning of the two teardrops below his eyes which can represent several things. It has been argued that the teardrops define a murder or the lost of a close friend to violence. Since he has them under both eyes, it probably relates to both situations.

In addition, it has been rumored that Lil Wayne and female rapper Trina were in a serious relationship. She has even stated that Wayne is “one of the sweetest guys that she has ever met!” However, at the present time, they both have conceded that they are good friends that understand each other goals.

Tattoo Galleries for Girls

July 13th, 2009

If you are a woman who’s on the prowl for tattoo designs, you may be a little bit disappointed by the overly aggressive, masculine flash art that you’ve seen in the tattoo parlors. Just remember though, that even if those designs are the only things that are on display, they are usually not the only things that the tattoo artist can do! Take a look online for tattoo galleries that can help you find the flash you need for the perfect tattoo.

When looking for online galleries of tattoo art, one way to search is by topic. Think about the tattoo you are interested in having on yourself, and think about what it means to you. For instance, if you’re interested in having something slinky, very feminine and just a little sly, think about a cat tattoo and search for good cat tattoo flash. The more specific your search, the more you will be able to narrow down what it is you are looking for.

Searching online can be time-consuming, but as large as the internet is, chances are, you’ll find the right tattoo flash art, or at least find a design that you can modify. Remember that several of these sites require that you pay for the design before you print it out.

One online gallery that you can take a look at is Bmezine. This exhaustive site has an enormous gallery of tattoo pictures as well as a place where up and coming tattoo artists have posted flash art that they are interested in sharing. These galleries are sorted by topic and subject, so whether you want to take a look at floral tattoos or tattoos of popular cartoon characters, you can usually find it there.

When you are looking for online tattoo galleries, don’t forget to look at general art sites as well. Deviantart and Elfwood are two online galleries for artists and you can find plenty of tattoo inspiration. There are plenty of design sites online that have lovely, more abstract art for you to peruse. When you are looking for the perfect tattoo for you, looking in unlikely places can find you the perfect tattoo that you’ve always been looking for.

No matter where you are searching for a tattoo, don’t forget to speak with your artist. He or she might have some terrific ideas on where to search, and if you are lucky, they might be able to draw you up a piece of personalized art!

Tattoo Removal And Reduction

July 11th, 2009

Today, tattoos have become more popular than ever with the advent of popular reality shows like Miami Ink and others. Many people that would have never before considered a tattoo are flocking in droves to get them done. Some do not put a lot of thought or think in the long term before having a tattoo done.

They put names of girlfriends, boyfriends, their mom, gang affiliation, crimes, etc. on their body and then after they break up with their girlfriend or similar a few weeks or months later they regret the tattoo. Worse, some even get tattooed on areas like the face and hands that can make a regular career or advancement in a professional setting impossible. This is where tattoo removal and tattoo reduction come in.

Excision

Excision is using a scalpel or similar to remove the affected area and then suturing and pulling together the skin to minimize scarring. If the tattoo is large or covers a big area than skin grafts may be necessary as the skin can only be pulled so taught before it will look worse, not heal right and possibly even pull apart.

Skin grafts are usually taken from areas inside the thighs and underarms where scarring will be minimal and largely unseen. Excision is surgery and does usually require a sedative or even anesthesia in cases with large tattoos. Due to the advent of lasers and TCA skin peels for tattoo removal, excision is rarely used anymore.

TCA skin peel

Chemical peels have been around in various forms for over half a century. They were first used for treating tough calluses and corns on the feet. About 20 years ago doctors started experimenting on different areas of the skin like the face with varying strengths and mixtures. It was found that a 25 to 50 % TCA skin peel was the most effective and easiest to apply. It was also found that this peel could affect deeper skin problems like acne scarring, wrinkles and then unwanted tattoos.

The TCA skin peel causes a controlled burn which results in several layers being peeled off and fresh, new skin being revealed. Many doctors now use the TCA skin peel as a very effective tattoo removal and reduction treatment. It can be either used alone or incorporated with the laser treatments described below which actually hastens healing and further reduces the chances of scarring. The TCA skin peel is so easy to use that it is now available for in home use for tattoo removal (something you will never see with laser treatment and excision).

How to be a Professional Tattoo Artist

July 9th, 2009

As tattoos become more popular these days, more and more people are getting tattoos or talking about getting one. This is great for the industry and even better for those who would like to get involved in the tattoo industry. But don’t think that becoming a professional tattoo artist is easy. There really isn’t any such thing as easy money by becoming a tattoo artist.

Many tattoo artist aspirants believe that purchasing a D.I.Y. tattoo kit from the advertisements of tattoo magazines is the starting point towards becoming a successful tattoo artist. Be aware that this equipment is of inferior quality and lacks precision. What next? Find a person to practice. And the result is dozens and dozens of people with awful tattoos and terrible scars and who will put you in their hate list forever. Furthermore, a true artist will be reluctant to take you under his wings because he is going to have a headache trying to guide you back on the right path.

The alternative is to pay a fee to a tattoo artist or shop to teach you the trade. So what is the type of fee to pay? As far as I know there are no reputable artists teaching you all he know for a fee. A true artist is not a true blooded businessman. If an artist is willing to teach you for a small fee, then consider this. Is he willing to part with all he knows for what you are paying? In one Asian country, the majority of tattoo shop websites advertise tattoo courses for a very small fee. But the problem is that after completing the course, you will have to come back for one refresher course then another and another. And I understand that after completion several such courses, you will not be able to tattoo properly. So the chances are you will be paying good money to some businessman who is just trying to make a fast buck.

So then, how to become a successful tattoo artist? For starters, you’ll need talent. You will never make it in the tattoo industry by tracing or stenciling, you will need to be able to draw great designs. To even get considered as a tattoo artist, a portfolio is needed. This will require you to draw lots of great designs to build up a portfolio. Your portfolio is proof that you have the skills that are needed to succeed in the industry. Without a portfolio, don’t even bother. I remember one South American guy asking me to train him to become a tattoo artist. And he said money is no problem. I told him that money is not an issue, just draw me a colored dragon and then a reaper. He came back after one week, and said he couldn’t draw a proper dragon or reaper. So end of story.

Once you have a portfolio to showcase your talents, you will need a mentor, someone who is willing to teach you the trade and share their secrets with you. Now this is the tricky thing, tattoo artists don’t like giving away their secrets. Simple reason is because many of them have been let down by their apprentices. Just take the case of my mentor. He has taken more than 20 people under his wings (all without any fee), but today only 3 of his graduates still “recognise” him as mentor. What happened to the rest? They have their own shops, but tell their customers that they can do the same quality of work as their mentor (also my mentor), but their prices are cheaper. So you know how much it hurts to be treated like my mentor? If you do find someone good, a real professional who is willing to tell you anything at all about the industry, then be grateful.

To train as a tattoo artist, you will need proper, high-quality equipment such as a precision tattoo machine, power supplies, shading equipment, needles, medical equipment and sanitation supplies. You will also need to know about cleanliness and what can and can’t be reused, as well as how to clean and sterilize your equipment. The popular professional tattoo artists are successful for a number of reasons, but mainly because they are clean and very talented.

You can succeed in the tattoo industry, but you will need to be talented, self-driven and dedicated. If you want to make lots of money as a tattoo artist, you are wasting your time. Become a tattoo artist because you love the art and love to create breath-taking pieces of body art. Be prepared to work for free and, most of all, if you get someone to stop and share a secret or two with you, take their advice. You will definitely need it.

What you do is you apprentice and work for a tattoo artist for very little pay. You do this so that he/she can take you under his/her wing and show you how to take your artistic skill and transfer it to the art that is called tattooing. If the master you’re apprenticing for is good, then along the way you’ll also learn about how to run a shop, what it takes to succeed, and what NOT to do…

How long does it take? Well…that depends on how fast you pick it up and how good your master is. It’s not uncommon for tattoo artists to apprentice for more than one artist in their careers…and each apprenticeship can last for several years.

This is not to discourage you…but the guys on Miami Ink didn’t just “decide” to become rock star tattoo artists one day. They scraped just to get by for many years before they became successful…and, chances are, you’ll have to, too.
